About Carbon Legal
Carbon Legal is an independent guide to UK carbon compliance and to choosing carbon, net zero and sustainability consultancy.
Every figure, date and threshold on the site is cited to the instrument that sets it.
Despite the name, it is not a law firm, and it is not regulated.
Purpose
What this site is for
People search for a carbon compliance consultancy when they need to know what applies to them and who can help.
This site answers the first question from the instruments themselves, and helps with the second by setting out what the work involves, which credentials exist and what to ask.
It is part of a network of independent references on UK sustainability reporting, alongside the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards reference at uksrs.org.uk.
It is written for finance directors, company secretaries, sustainability and energy managers, and anyone buying consultancy support for the first time.

Offer
What is on offer, and what is not
Today there are three things: the guides, a free 15-minute call, and, where it helps, an introduction to independent specialists.
Carbon Legal has no clients to cite and publishes no prices, because nothing is sold on the site.
It does not act as an ESOS lead assessor, provide assurance, submit notifications or give legal advice.
What is available is set out on the services page.
A consultancy service is being built.
Until it exists, this site will not describe it as if it did.
Sourcing
How we source what we publish
Every factual claim traces to a primary source named to the provision: the regulation, the paragraph of the standard, the page of the consultation.
Where a rule is proposed rather than made — the government’s plan to remove the directors’ report is one case — we say “proposed”.
Commentary from law firms, consultancies and software vendors is never the source for a figure on this site.
Where a page has carried an error, we correct it against the primary source and update that page’s verified date.
If you find a claim that does not match its source, tell us through the contact page.
